MARINE CORROSION SURVEY

Purpose:  The corrosion protection system on a boat should be checked at regular intervals.  Failure to do so could result in costly and time consuming repairs.  A marine corrosion survey is intended to prevent problems or determine the root cause and solution of a problem should one already exist.

Method: Systematic Corrosion Survey. Conducting  a basic corrosion survey includes the following steps:

  • Evaluating the levels of Cathodic protection
  • Testing for onboard DC stray current sources
  • Testing the integrity of the Cathodic bonding system
  • Testing the integrity of galvanic isolation
  • Identify  DC Galvanic currents in the shore power grounding connection
  • Identify DC Stray currents in the shore power grounding connection
  • Identify AC residual current in the shore power cord
  • Test for any on board AC stray current sources (faults)
